Salary and Benefits: 

Location: This role could be based in our London, Sheffield or Bristol Offices with occasional working from home. It will involve some travel to our offices on occasions.

Hours: 35 hours per week (we would consider 28 hours a week for the right candidate)

Contract: Permanent

Salary: £29,000 - £30,000 per annum for a full-time role (if the role is based in London, we would also pay a London Living Allowance of £3,500 per annum)

Job Description: 

We are a small independent charitable trust that supports community businesses in England, endowed by funding. Our vision is having better places through community business. We want to back people to build successful community businesses for the benefit of their local places. The Programmes team is responsible for the delivery of high-quality funding programmes to community businesses across England, as well as in our targeted sectors and places.

We are seeking a Programme Improvement Officer to contribute to continuous improvement of our programmes by supporting analysis, learning and change projects. You will be working as part of an energetic team on a range of programmes enabling community businesses to grow and thrive.


About The Role

Reports to: Head of Programme Improvement

Role Purpose: This role will contribute to continuous improvement of our organisation's programmes by supporting analysis, learning and change projects

Key Responsibilities

Support analysis of our programmes and research on what other organisations are doing;

  • Carry out specific short-term market research projects to help our organisation benchmark itself against and learn from comparable organisations’ practices on a range of strategic issues;
  • Carry out specific short-term analytical projects to inform continuous improvement of programmes, drawing on learning from current delivery, evaluation and feedback from applicants and those we fund;
  • Contribute to market research to help our organisation refine its outreach to under-represented groups;

Champion evidence-based learning to inform future activity

  • Plan and organise internal events, key meetings and other activities to support the uptake of findings from the research and evaluation team in programmes;

Assist programme managers on continuous improvement of programmes;

  • Support programme managers and delivery partners with the implementation of specific strategic changes and operational improvements;

Support high-quality reporting and effective communications on programmes across the organisation

  • Supporting high-quality programme reporting to the Leadership team, the Board and Board committees;

Promote compliance with programme policy requirements

  • Assist programme managers and delivery partners to understand and meet legal and regulatory requirements;

Additional responsibilities

  • Be an active and supportive member of the programmes team; taking part in support and learning activities.
  • Support the wider work of the Programmes Team (including short-term projects), and to the wider organisational priorities.
  • Provide ad-hoc assistance to other team members as required.

Person Specification

Skills and Experience

  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time effectively and excellent time management
  • Excellent IT skills in general and specific experience of using Microsoft Excel conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis and presentation of data. Further experience of other data packages welcome.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience of preparing internal reports and external communications
  • Experience of organising and facilitating meetings/events
  • Experience of team coordination, in support of information sharing and team learning
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively and transparently internally and with partners/suppliers

Desired experience

  • Experience working at an organisation that makes charitable grants
  • Project management skills and experience
  • Experience of volunteering or working at community businesses or social or small enterprises or working to support them.
