Better Bankside – one of London and the UK’s foremost Business Improvement Districts – is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Operations Officer to join our friendly, motivated and professional team. This job is a great opportunity to support the security, public realm and sustainability focused work carried out in the area. The Operations Officer will play a key role at Better Bankside supporting all the operational elements of our programme of works 

 

About Better Bankside:

Better Bankside is a Business Improvement District (BID) in Southwark, London. Its aim is to make Bankside a thriving place to work, live and visit and, ultimately, to become the ‘best neighbourhood in the world’. Better Bankside was formally established in 2005 and was the third BID in the UK.

A Business Improvement District (BID) is an independent, business-owned and led company, which seeks to improve a given location for commercial activity. Better Bankside's members are the 700+ companies in the BID area (between Hatfields in the west and London Bridge in the east, and south from the River as far as Union Street, Borough Station and Webber Street) who pay its annual 'levy'. Many of these are heavily involved in the governance of the company.

 

Job Overview:

The Operations Officer will support the Operations Manager in delivering our programme of Security & Resilience and Environmental projects and services. Specifically, being responsible for the day to day oversight, checking and delivery of Better Bankside’s public realm activities and the organisations public realm assets. The successful candidate will oversee the work of the Better Bankside Cleaning Team; coordinate our portfolio of safety/security focused projects and liaise with the Better Bankside Community Wardens Team, funded Police Constables and Environmental Enforcement Officer. The role will also involve supporting the Better Bankside Management Team with events, business engagement, and CR initiatives.

 

Responsibilities:  

Public realm maintenance

  • Day to day management of ‘designated’ public spaces within the area. Ensuring they are suitable for hosting events, sitting out, eating and drinking. Focusing on the cleanliness and safety of those spaces.
  • Administration of the BID’s public realm assets. Handling bookings, delivery and retrieval, placement, cleaning; maintenance, proper use, storage, auditing stock and procurement as required.
  • Ensuring seating arrangements outside bars, pubs, restaurants, cafes etc complies with the owner’s licence agreement, such areas are kept clean, tidy and safe and disturbances are kept within acceptable levels. dealing with any departure from such terms and reporting any persistent infringements. 
  • Patrolling the BID area and carry out environmental audits recording any issues and passing to the relevant stakeholder to action.
  • Work closely with Better Bankside’s cleaning contractor to oversee the Better Bankside Cleaning Team, ensuring work is completed to a high standard, ad hoc tasks and business requests are delegated to the relevant team member and any issues are reported to the Operations Manager.
  • Oversee the maintenance of cleaning team equipment, ordering replacement parts/new equipment where necessary.
  • Support Better Bankside’s Urban Gardener in maintaining the BID’s greening sites. Assisting with preparing for horticultural awards such as London in Bloom and Green Flag and providing help during judging.

Security and area resilience:

  • Help set up and administer a ‘Shopwatch’ initiative, promoting existing area initiatives such as ‘Pubwatch’ and the Business Crime Reduction Partnership.
  • Support the Operations Manager in administrating the Southwark Community Security Zone Security & Resilience Forum and its mass notification system. 
  • Maintain regular contact with retailers, licensed premises and F&B businesses to provide safety and security advice.  
  • Work closely with and assist the Better Bankside Wardens, funded Police Constables and Environmental Enforcement Officer. Alerting them to issues with the street population, suspicious, antisocial and criminal behaviour, including illegal trading/gambling in designated areas. Assist in the removal of illegal traders and the confiscation of equipment.
  • Support the preparations and roll out of the BIDs severe weather plan. Ensuring equipment is in good working order and stock levels are high.

Operational & logistical support: 

  • Support the Operations Manager in the delivery of the BID’s business waste management service.
  • Support the delivery of the BID’s portfolio of pilot projects and public realm improvements such as the Waste Micro-consolidation Project, Logistics Centre, Preferred Suppliers Scheme and Borough High Street Inns and Yards.
  • Assist Better Bankside staff to organise, set up and manage festivals and events.
  • Facilitate the distribution of marketing collateral to local businesses and partners.
  • Supporting partner events such as the Great Get Together, Mint Street Music Festival, Africa Centre Summer Party, BRF Summer Party amongst others.
  • Assist the CR Manager with CR projects such as Together at Christmas, Events Academy and support/facilitate members’ in-kind donations.
  • Support the Office Manager and Business Support Coordinator with the management of Community Space bookings.
  • Support the Sustainable Travel Manager in the management of the Better Bankside Secure Cycle Park.

 

General:

  • To meet and greet member of the public, assist with giving directions and advice.
  • Any necessary tasks and activities that the Operations Manager deems necessary to fulfil this role.

The right person will be well organised, observant and able to use their own initiative to solve problems. The right candidate will be an energetic person, motivated to provide a high level of support and will be comfortable interacting with people.

 

Required skills and competencies:

  • Ability to organise own workload and use own initiative (Essential)
  • Confident in dealing with the public with friendly and professional communication skills (Essential)
  • Good written and spoken English (Essential)
  • Confident user of MS Office software packages: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook (Desirable)
  • Good observation skills and attention to detail (Desirable)
  • Able to confidently develop positive and productive working relationships (Essential)
  • Being a strong team player who will embody Better Bankside culture and values (Essential)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) (Desirable)
  • A full clean driving licence (Essential)
  • Physically able to undertake manual tasks when required (Essential)

 

Required experience and education:

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience working in a relevant environment (Essential)
  • Knowledge of community safety and enforcement and related disciplines preferably within an inner-city environment (Desirable)
  • Ability to speak Spanish and/or Polish (Desirable)
  • Interest in Bankside as an area to live, work and visit (Essential)
