Job Description: 

As Education Manager you will lead on school engagement across the organisation. These projects will serve particular strategic objectives as defined in The Theatre’s Business Plan (as updated annually). You will also contribute to organisation-wide initiatives from an education and community perspective. The role will include:

  • The administration and development of a free to access Schools Club, working with 40 secondary schools across London providing bespoke workshops, theatre tickets, backstage tours and diverse educational resources for member staff and students
  • Oversee the creation, administration and development of additional school projects, where funding permits
  • Lead on the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for commercialising schools engagement
  • Work with the Communications team to develop the communications and marketing strategy for schools
  • Work with the Development team to support fundraising applications in relation to education and community projects


Areas of Responsibility

Schools Club:

  • To project manage and develop Schools Club activity, ensuring that it is meeting its objectives and reviewing this regularly
  • To oversee the administration of projects ensuring targets are met and that agreed outputs are delivered on time and to budget
  • To write, edit and produce booklets and materials such as Teacher’s Resources and Education Packs to accompany the main-house shows
  • To recruit and supervise appropriate freelancers to deliver the Education projects ensuring they are contracted and paid accordingly in collaboration with HR
  • To evaluate Schools Club and additional Education activity throughout the year, gathering requisite data, producing evaluation materials independently and in conjunction with external evaluators
  • To lead on external communications for School’s Club and additional Education projects, including copy, images and promotion
  • To work closely with The Theatre’s Design team to create marketing material for School’s Club in line with The Theatre branding guidelines


Schools Engagement Strategy:

  • To develop strategic education activity to include commercialising school engagement and deliver against set KPIs​
  • To develop and implement a strong marketing strategy for schools engagement


Department activity:

  • To develop additional schools projects, both free to access and commercial, where appropriate and in line with The Theatre’s Business Plan (updated annually)
  • To maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders from participants to supporters to professionals involved in the department’s activity
  • To use digital platforms to share outputs from Education projects, building engagement and providing the work with a wider reach
  • To maintain a detailed knowledge of changes to the current education system and practical understanding of the effects on schools


Company-wide activity:

  • To attend Development fundraising events as requested
  • To contribute to regular staff meetings sharing information and connecting staff with the activity of all Education projects
  • To represent The Theatre at various events and ensure its reputation is maintained

Person specification

The post holder must be able to demonstrate the following:



  • Experience of devising and delivering high quality participatory arts projects within schools – primary and secondary
  • Experience and knowledge of marketing and communications with schools
  • Experience of a commercial approach to schools engagement
  • Strong knowledge of the education system
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills, and a clear head under pressure
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Proven experience of working with young people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience of facilitating participatory arts workshops
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience of managing artists and facilitators
  • Proven ability of managing budgets
  • An energetic, thorough and creative approach with a good eye for detail
  • A robust understanding of best practice and new developments within a theatre educational context
  • Education to degree level in the creative arts (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience of evaluation design, analysis and reporting
  • Experience of writing copy for content and marketing materials
  • A current Disclosure and Barring Service check certificate (or must be willing to undergo one)



  • Experience of working in London schools
  • A knowledge of digital media and experience of supporting online learning processes
  • Experience of tessitura
  • Experience of working within a theatre building
  • First Aid Training
