Job Description: 

Role Purpose

This role leads on community engagement, with a particular focus on communities in Southwark and Lambeth, 15-25 year olds and people currently not deeply engaged with arts and science.

The postholder will work closely with teams that have a particular focus on local communities. To compliment these collaborations, the role will involve facilitating positive dialogue with local community and youth groups in the city, with a primary focus on the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark.

The postholder will be responsible for the Young Leaders programme, currently in its first year, as well as championing the involvement of young adults in participative programmes for each season. The Community Engagement Manager will also be involved in reviewing and implementing the company’s safeguarding policy and ensuring the work of all staff considers the opinions, skills and talents of young people, empowering them to help shape and build the future of the Gallery.


Role Profile

Key Objectives

  • To own and collaboratively implement an engagement strategy to connect with young people aged 15-25 and communities in Southwark and Lambeth.
  • To ensure that the community engagement contributes effectively to the university’s ambitions, including Local Partners, the university’s strategic engagement programme with local boroughs
  • To develop sustainable and effective structures and relationships that allow a diverse range of people, especially 15-25 year olds, to shape the programme as each programming season is developed, while working in spaces which they own and control
  • To ensure effective working relationships with other relevant areas of the organisation, ensuring opportunities are signposted and synergies maximised
  • To support productive, two-way links between students, academics and staff, and local businesses, local government, residents, schools and health/social care providers, with an aim to showcase the value of our organisation to each and opportunities for collaboration
  • To raise the profile and build awareness of our organisation in Southwark and Lambeth and beyond to increase and broaden participation in programmes especially from groups without pre-existing interest in science and art


Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Director of Operations, Head of Programming and Marketing Manager and in consultation with Head of Local Partners and Widening Participation, to identify milestones and key opportunities for community engagement
  • Manage and implement the community engagement plan for the organisation
  • Work collectively with the Programming team and key contacts to deliver the youth engagement programme involving local young people
  • Maintain existing and develop new relationships with a range of local stakeholders, community gatekeepers, residents, businesses, BIDs and others, to help communicate the value of our organisation and the university’s work to the local community
  • Lead on local community outreach in collaboration with key community focused staff through informal working and formal partnerships with local youth groups, businesses, health/social care providers and others to deliver on joint objectives
  • Develop and implement an evaluation protocol to assess impact of our community engagement
  • Be actively involved in reviewing and implementing our safeguarding policy
  • Work with the team to identify opportunities for skills acquisition and employment for local members of the community at the organisation as a priority to support key objectives relating to the Vision 2029 strategy, namely supporting business, enterprise & entrepreneurship, and education & attainment for children and young people
  • Develop and maintain links with students and student societies to ensure we are a valued part of the student experience, enhancing their academic and social aspects of their time at university
  • Work within the systems and processes and other directorate- or department-specific systems
  • Any other relevant duties as required by the Marketing Manager.


Education / Qualification and Training

Graduate or equivalent experience


Knowledge / Skills

  • Ability to build and sustain creative and productive relationships with groups of young people
  • Understanding of how to increase representation and diversity with the sector 
  • Familiar with the local communities of Southwark and Lambeth and engaging with them with respect, cultural sensitivity and a friendly, non-elitist and collegiate spirit
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to develop and deliver dynamic and engaging public presentations to diverse audiences in an accessible and positive manner
  • Outstanding listening, communication, networking and interpersonal skills in person and in writing
  • Ability to negotiate with external partners, manage partnership agreements and work proactively to build new contacts and relationships
  • Ability to exercise initiative and plan work independently
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Demonstrable writing and editing skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent IT literacy (Microsoft Office, social media platforms, website content systems, CRM systems)
  • Knowledge and understanding of the techniques and practical issues in building and sustaining links with community gatekeepers, stakeholders and groups
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple and competing priorities in a varied portfolio of current projects
  • Knowledge of the higher education sector
  • Digital media knowledge and awareness of current trends
  • Knowledge of the communities of Southwark and Lambeth and key local issues of interest/concern



  • Experience of working to build and maintain a range of external networks and relationships in local communities
  • Experience of working with young people in and out of school settings and overseeing their safety
  • Experience in presenting to and positively influencing community stakeholders
  • Experience of stakeholder management within a complex field or organisation
  • Experience of and a passion for regular engagement via social media channels
  • Experience of evaluation of community engagement programmes and measuring social impact
  • Experience of positive and fruitful working relationships with multiple internal departments/teams at once with potentially conflicting objectives, priorities or deadlines
  • Experience of effective and proactive independent working, goal setting, achieving targets, reporting and evaluation of strategic priorities without direct instruction or supervision

Role specific requirements

Flexible and adaptable, with a willingness to work outside office hours as necessary to fit in with community events and meetings required to build networks and relationships.
