This post is graded on Band 6L of the gallery’s pay scales.

An appointment to the full-time post will be made at the minimum of the band at £18,940 per annum.

Type of Contract

This appointment is offered on a permanent contract.

Working Hours

This post is offered on a full-time contract working 36 hours per week – Monday to Sunday in accordance with the Visitor Experience department 7-day Rota.  

Requests for part-time working will also be considered and can be discussed at interview stage.

Annual Leave and Public Holidays

Annual leave is 25 working days per annum rising to 27 working days per annum after three years’ service.  In addition, we offer paid time off for the 8 public holidays and 1 gallery day (on 24 December when the galleries are closed).

As a Visitor Assistant, you’ll work in a range of spaces every day at one of our two galleries in London.  You’ll be there to answer questions, provide information and advice. But that’s not all. We’ll expect you to take the initiative and spot appropriate opportunities to engage visitors in conversation, so they have every chance to make the most of their visit. Ultimately, you’ll make sure a trip to our gallery is a delight from start to finish. You’ll provide the kind of positive experience people love to talk about.

Purpose of the Job:

To welcome visitors to the galleries and help them to enjoy their experience of our galleries and make the most of their visit.

 

Main Activities/Responsibilities:

Greet visitors in an approachable, professional and welcoming manner.

  • Be approachable in the galleries as the public face of our gallery and look for opportunities to engage visitors, and enable them to get the most out of their visit.
  • Provide general information to visitors about our  exhibitions and displays and promote the daily events, ticketing, catering and retail operations as appropriate.
  • Be aware of display items that need special care (ie vulnerable exhibits, exhibits with restricted access) and communicate and share this with visitors.
  • Support, implement and explain gallery rules and regulations as and when required.
  • Assist in the actions taken during major incidents and emergencies.
  • Assist in the clearing of the galleries at closing times and during any evacuation procedure.
  • Keep up to date with current exhibitions, collections information, daily events in the galleries and general tourist information.
  • Raise any incidents relating to art work security and building presentation as they arise using radios for communication as necessary and following agreed procedures for their resolution.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be directed from time to time by the Head of Visitor Experience, Senior Visitor Experience Manager, Duty Manager or Visitor Experience Manager.

 

Person Specification:

Essential

  • Passionate about offering outstanding customer care in a busy gallery environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrating the ability to talk to a wide range of people, engaging with them about Tate’s exhibitions and activities.
  • Able to work independently using own initiative showing a proactive, positive and flexible approach to work. Also, comfortable working as part of a team with the ability to build good working relationships with other departments to ensure the best possible customer care is delivered.
  • Ability to work under pressure. Using own initiative to identify problems and find solutions.
  • Willingness to develop knowledge of the  collection, exhibitions and activities. Demonstrate a commitment to the work that we do.
  • An understanding of the principles of equality and diversity in relation to visitors’ needs.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of another language, including British Sign Language.
  • Interest in galleries, museums, cultural and tourist activities.
  • Interest in art.
