Job Description: 

The Baylis Director role provides a unique opportunity for an early career director to work closely within the Artistic team at The Theatre, direct a production on stage, propose a new piece for commission, engage with our development, education and community work and act as The Theatre's Ambassador.

The preparation period will begin in February 2018, with the official start date in September 2018, ending in August 2019.


The position will span 12 months, and during this time the Baylis Director will:

  • Direct a production on The Theatre main stage within Season 4 with a level of resourcing commensurate with other productions within the Season;
  • Work closely with the Artistic Director to support programming and artistic planning, including attending programming meetings and reviewing scripts;
  • Be willing to engage in a range of additional projects within the theatre to be mutually agreed with The Theatre;
  • Act as a connector throughout the building becoming part of The Theatre family, supporting the Artistic Director and senior management with the networking of staff and creatives;
  • Attend and optionally speak at development events from time to time during their year, either with the Artistic Director or in his place, to support the cultivation of new and existing supporters;
  • Propose a commission for a new piece of work, to be presented at a suitable London venue as decided with the Artistic Director. The Theatre will have first right of refusal to present the commission at The Theatre but no obligation to do so.


How will it work?

The term of appointment will be12 months (spanning the complete Season). 

It is a freelance role, and the Baylis Director will be encouraged to take on other commitments during the term (following prior discussion with the Artistic Director).


  • £20,000 for the term of the engagement (September 2018 to August 2019)
  • £100 a day to cover fees for attending any meetings etc as part of the role during the 6 months prior to officially commencing the engagement (for up to 20 days maximum).
  • £10,000 Director’s fee and royalties at 2% paid in accordance with The Theatre’s standard terms for the production directed during Season 4.
  • Should The Theatre approve a commission proposed by the Baylis Director, the company will also contribute £5,000 towards its production.


Person specification and Experience required: 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have directed two or more professional productions which have had demonstrable impact;
  • Have experience of directing fringe or regional theatre;
  • Display a commitment to developing new work;
  • Have a passion for engaging audiences in the magic and adventure of theatre;
  • Be able to demonstrate that this opportunity will significantly advance their opportunity and profile in the industry; and
  • Have the independent right to work in the UK.
